Machholz (C/2004 Q2) was a bright comet that graced our skies during the Winter of 2004-2005. The comet was easily visible to the naked eye. A tail had been evident a couple of days prior to this image, but unfortunately it detached. The green color is due to cyanogen and diatomic carbon that sublime out of the core. The image was taken at the Chihuahuan Desert Nature Park with my camera mounted atop my C11 (no guiding). The sky was clear; seeing was average. |
