Each month (moonth), the moon makes a full orbit around the Earth. During this cycle, we (Earthlings) see the slowly-changing illuminated portion. The continuum of illuminated faces has been categorized into various phases (crescent, first quarter, gibbous, full, etcetera). This image shows three such 'phases': the third quarter, the full moon, and the first quarter. The image is a composite of three large images acquired using a Phillips ToUCam (a webcam). Each image is comprised of 60-100 individual pictures that were pieced together using Photoshop. The full-size image is 2 x 3 feet at 300 dpi. Clicking on the above image will bring up a larger image (1024 x 683 pixels) |
