Partially Eclipsed Moon - Imaged 16Sept 2024 (MDT) from Las Cruces, NM

Partial Lunar Eclipse

I don't normally pay a lot of attention to partial lunar eclipses, but an Italian astronomer (Giovanni Di Giovanni) contacted the club and requested images for a study relating lunar umbral/penumbral brightness with certain atmospheric conditions on Earth. The eclipse was fairly early in the evening, so I obliged. From just after Moonrise until just after U4, I captured images every two minutes - nearly 100 in all. All taken at ISO 800 for 1/800". Light curve

Giovanni used un-processed images to derive his light curves. An example of his analysis using one of my images is shown to the right with an unprocessed image shown in the inset. A copy of Giovanni's 2018 publication can be found by clicking here.

I used Photoshop on one image (from near eclipse maximum) to bring out the subtle colors of the lunar surface. That image appears above.

The field of view used to acquire the image is shown in the Imaging Details box (below). The image at top is cropped and reduced in size. Clicking the image above will open up a larger version of the image.
