Sharpless 1-2 (imaged near Rodeo, NM) |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||
Sharpless 2-1 is a faint diffuse nebula located in the constellation Scorpius. Both red emission and blue reflection nebulosity are present. The brightest star (toward the lower left in the image above) is magnitude 2.9 pi Scorpii, a B-class star and a major source of illumination for the nebula (Sharpless, 1959). I imaged the region from Rusty's RV (near Rodeo, NM) using both my CCD and DSLR. The CCD was mounted to a 100mm Canon lens while the DSLR was mounted to a 200mm Canon f/2 lens. I used the CCD to collect Ha data, while the DSLR collected color data. In retrospect, I wish I had brought my color filters and collected some blue and/or green data with the CCD since there is considerable but faint reflection nebulosity in the area. Instead, I did my best to extract reflection nebulosity detail from the blue and green channels of the DSLR images. Ha and color data was collected over the course of four nights. The field of view used to acquire the image is shown in the Imaging Details box and in the inset to the right. The image at top is slightly cropped and reduced in size (to roughly 25% scale). Clicking the image above will open up a larger, version.
