Each month (moonth), the moon makes a full orbit around the Earth. During this cycle, we see a continuum of illuminated phases (crescent, first quarter, gibbous, full, etcetera). When the illuminated portion is growing, the Moon is said to be 'waxing'; when the illuminated portion is shrinking, the Moon is said to be 'waning'. This image shows a waxing crescent Moon. The image is comprised of 35 individual pictures taken with a Phillips ToUCam (a webcam) that were pieced together using Photoshop.
