Orion's Scabbard (imaged from ASLC's 'Upham' Dark Sky site in Southern NM) |

Object Information Imaging Details |

The belt and scabbard region of Orion contains several prominent nebulae including the Horsehead, Flame, Orion and Running Man nebulae. This widefield image of the region shows these nebulae as well as the distinctive stars comprising Orion's Belt. These nebulae are visible in modest to moderate-sized telescopes except for the Horsehead nebula which requires a larger telescope, dark skies and an H-beta nebula filter. This image was taken at my club's dark sky site located about 35 miles north of Las Cruces. Thanks to Dave Dockery for providing the lens. Clicking the above image will bring up a larger and more detailed image. |
